Mission

Founded in 2008, SEM Southern Plains is a member chapter of the Society for Ethnomusicology. The Society for Ethnomusicology (SEM) was founded in 1955 to promote the research, study, and performance of music in all historical periods and cultural contexts. SEM is multidisciplinary in concept and worldwide in scope. Members of the Society for Ethnomusicology are scholars, students, performers, publishers, museum specialists, and librarians from numerous disciplines.

Call for papers for the 2012 SEMSP conference, to be held March 30-April 1, 2012 at the University of Texas-Pan American, Edinburg. Deadline for submissions exxtended to: February 1, 2012. Read more.

The Vida Chenoweth Student Paper Prize for 2011 was awarded to Andrés Amado, University of Texas, Austin.  Congratulations, Andrés! The prize committee had a tough time as this year’s submissions were exceptionally strong. However, the committee agreed that Mr. Amado’s paper was a “very strong contribution to current ethnomusicological work on cosmopolitanism, nationalism and modernity that challenges a number of theoretical assumptions in the field.” Read more.

The Southern Plains chapter of the Society for Ethnomusicology maintains electronic communication with its members through a moderated email group.  Currently, this group is supported by Yahoo Groups.  Membership is open to anyone interested in the activities of the SEM-Southern Plains Chapter.  To join, individuals should either create a user account at Yahoo Groups, or, log in to Yahoo Groups using their existing account.
